An Evening with Dave Black

The Northern California chapter of ASMP is especially pleased to present an evening with Dave Black , renowned sports, portrait, nature photographer and teacher. Dave will show many of his award winning photographs and tell the back stories of how they were created. His presentation will include images from his travel and sports portfolios as well as his lightpaintings series. He will discuss creativity and lighting techniques that all photographers can use to improve their images. Dave is a master in the use of speedlights, the small strobes made by Nikon and other manufacturers that connect seamlessly to DSLRs and allow unlimited creative control both off and on camera. He will show the audience how he sets up lights outdoors and includes the ambient available light to make his subjects pop off the page with excitement and clarity. Dave will conduct an extensive Q&A .

Dave loves sharing his knowledge-“The main goal of my presentation and the seminar is to emphasize to photographers the importance of discovering what will help them excel in their craft and move ahead of the pack. I will discuss avenues that will address moving ahead, and believe understanding and perfecting the use of light is key”.

Dave’s work has appeared in a variety of magazines such as Sports Illustrated, Time, Newsweek, ESPN, Parade and the Wall Street Journal. Publishers such as Simon and Schuster, Bantam Double Day, Pindar Press, Hyperion, Scribner, and Broadway, and television shows on ABC Sports, CBS Sports, NBC Sports, E Entertainment, and the award winning ESPN Sports Century have also used Dave’s images.

Commercial clients include Chevy, McDonalds, Reebok, Hallmark, Coca Cola, Xerox, Nikon, Visa, Johnson and Johnson, Kodak, AT&T, East West Banks, NFL Properties, Bogen, Lexar Mediaand the United States Olympic Committee.

Dave is a regular faculty member and featured speaker with several workshops including Rich Clarkson’s Sports Photography Workshops and Photography at the Summit Workshops Series, Nikon’s Churchill Downs and College Series Workshops, Sports Shooter Workshops and the Sports Shooter Academy. Dave also lectures and conducts several of his own workshops at a variety of Colleges and Universities each year.
