ASMP NorCal's Multimedia Special Interest Group Present Dai Sugano and Jan Sturman.

Dai Sugano works for the San Jose Mercury News and is an 2008 Emmy award winner.  Dai will show several of his multimedia projects and discuss them in detail.  There’s no disputing Dai’s ability to document a story but he also has a very strong artistic side that adds to his work in a special way.

Jan Sturmann, a Berkeley-based still photographer specializing in multimedia projects for commercial clients and NGOs will talk about his experience building a viable business in this emerging specialty.

More About These Great Speakers:

Dai Sugano

Native of Japan, Dai Sugano is an Emmy award winning photojournalist and senior multimedia editor at the San Jose Mercury News. He co-created MercuryNewsPhoto.com whose interactive storytelling has been judged among the worlds best two years in a row in the Pictures of the Year International contest.  Sugano covers a wide range of assignments which have included: Hmong refugees' immigration to the United States; the California Recall; former Japanese internment camp survivors, and a number of stories in politics.  In 2008, "Uprooted," which looks at displacement of a group of mobile home residents in Sunnyvale, won an Emmy Award in the category of New Approaches to News and Documentary Programming: Documentaries. His other works have been nominated for an Emmy Award and a Pulitzer Prize in photography; and have received international and national recognitions.  See Dai’s 2008 Emmy winner and Dai’s image gallery at the Merc.

Jan Sturmann

Born to German parents in South Africa, Berkeley-based photographer Jan Stürmann incorporated the first multi of multimedia seven years ago when he realized that he had to write the accompanying articles if he wanted to see his photojournalistic work published.  But with printed media becoming as obsolete as smoke signals, and the web expanding the potential of effective storytelling, he has continued to add more multi-s to the media package, including audio, video and editing. He now generates most of his income creating multimedia for NGO, corporate and editorial clients. Showing examples of his recent work, Jan will discuss the ungraceful juggling act of making it as a multimedia photographer.  Jan’s multimedia site and Jan’s home page.
