Frans Lanting and LIFE: A Journey Through Time

Join us in January for a very special evening with Frans Lanting, the internationally acclaimed wildlife photographer, for a fascinating multimedia presentation and discussion of images from his latest book LIFE: A Journey Through Time.

For more than two decades, Dutch-born Lanting has documented wildlife from the Amazon to Antarctica to promote understanding about the Earth and its natural history through images that convey a passion for nature and a sense of wonder about our living planet.

This multi-year project is based on the idea that one can see the past through animals and plants living in the present. He has traveled the world to photograph a lyrical interpretation of life on Earth from its earliest one-cell beginnings to its present diversity. His search has led him into primordial landscapes that preserve time capsules of life’s history and into unique museum collections of fossils and microscopic life.

His project is presented using multiple mediums: as a large-format book, a multimedia orchestral performance with music by Philip Glass, a traveling photographic exhibition, and a dedicated educational website, www.LifeThroughTime.com.

The musical version of LIFE: A Journey Through Time was produced by the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music in collaboration with Frans Lanting and visual designer Alexander V. Nichols, with music for orchestra by Philip Glass, a composer internationally renowned for his opera, dance, orchestra, and film scores.

Led by acclaimed conductor Marin Alsop, LIFE Music premiered to sold-out audiences in Santa Cruz, California in July 2006. The next performances of LIFE Music will be in Washington, D. C. and Baltimore in February 2007.

The photographic exhibition will be displayed through September 3, 2007 at the National Museum of Natural History of the Netherlands, in Leiden. Afterwards, the exhibit will tour through Europe and around the world. A separate North American exhibition will tour concurrently with the European exhibit.

All of Lanting’s images of wildlife “time capsules” were made with Nikon 35mm and digital SLRs. His handsome 304-page LIFE coffee-table book, edited by Christine Eckstrom and published by Taschen, will be on sale at the event. Lanting will also be available for book signings.
