Photography...How to Succed in a Tough Market ~ A Town Hall Meeting

t was the best of times, it was the worst of times... boy, don’t we know it.  But whatever the times, it’s not time to roll over, but to set your sights on a better business climate.  Join us as we take aim together to build a stronger, more profitable photo-business community.  Empower yourself and energize your business with a better understanding of commercial and editorial photography.  Explore and utilize professional best practices for effective contracts, estimating, licensing, copyright, negotiations, and assignment production.

Panelists are all seasoned commercial / editorial shooters with extensive business experience.  They have each worked to raise the bar for other photographers to build a better industry in Northern California.

While this is the nuts and bolts stuff to help newer businesses be a professional media enterprise, we encourage our seasoned members to attend as well.  First, because it helps for us all to be reminded of the importance of basic business values as we face a difficult year.  Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, we’ll encourage a townhall atmosphere to allow audience contributions as well.

Pass the word about this meeting to all your friends, colleagues, and even competitors.  This meeting is about the value of your work and the approach you take to preserve it which, of course, benefits us all.

Panelists include…

Steve Whittaker
With a background in advertising and graphic design, Steve started Whittaker Photography in 1980.  Specializing in architecture, interiors and exteriors, he shoots for architects, designers, ad agencies, and editorial clients.  Steve has served the Northern California photo community through leadership at ASMP NorCal, including a stint as Chapter President.  He is currently taking his business acumen on the road with presentations to schools, ASMP chapters, and anyone else wanting a better commercial photo business.

Mark Darley
Mark Darley was on course for a life of law when he tacked left and sailed around the world as a professional yachtsman.  He landed in New York and then combined his interests in photography and architecture, attended Parsons School of Design, and launched his photography business in New York 1980. In 1989 he moved to Mill Valley to compete with Steve Whittaker!  Mark started in editorial work for the likes of “House & Garden” and the “New York Times Magazine” both in the US and in Europe while also shooting for architects, designers and agencies. His stock is represented by Esto and he has served on the board of APA Northern California.

Kent Lacin
Operating one of Sacramento’s premiere commercial studios since 1981, Kent has won national awards and has been featured in GRAPHIS, Idn  CameraArts  and ARTWEEK publications. He is a generalist, photographically; shooting everything from food to advertising to corporate annual reports. Kent always gives to this community by teaching in the photography program at Sac State and has served as president of ASAP, the Association of Sacramento Advertising Photographers.

William Foster
With business presence in both Sacramento and Washington DC, Bill shoots primarily for corporate and political clients on both coasts.  He has just completed a two-year assignment as official photographer to Governor Schwarzenegger. Having fully embraced the digital world of high-end web design, Bill has shared these skills through numerous presentations to ASMP, the NPPA Northern Short Course and more.

Marc Longwood
Wildlife biologist turned pro photographer in the early eighties, Marc specialized mainly in people and the travel/hospitality industry.  From Apple to Xerox and Businessweek to Wine Spectator, Marc shoots primarily on location for advertising, corporate, and magazine clients. He has also taught digital imaging at Sac State and, like Steve, has served extensively on the ASMP NorCal board, including a term as President.
