The Eloquence and Intention of Film in the Digital Age - An evening with with Jock McDonald and Thomas Heinser- At LeftSpace studios
This event will blow your pixels off! Two highly acclaimed photographers Jock McDonald and Thomas Heinser talk about shooting Film in todays digital world. Don't miss this one!
In the photography world of immediate gratification there is another way to approach photography. A way of slowing down, and using other tools for image making. Humanistic tools, like intuition, pre visualization, and intention. The digital age is here and here to stay, but the way of using film to bring private control to your photography is at your disposal.
- Jock McDonald
Jock McDonald, born in Vancouver, Canada in 1961, opened his photography and film studio in San Francisco in 1986. He is a self-taught photographer whose work --both in black-and-white and color-- has achieved national and international critical acclaim for its distinctive use of wit, humor, pathos, and qualities of mystery. McDonald’s portraiture and his depictions of world rural life have been widely published and exhibited in galleries and museums around the world, including exhibitions in the U.S., Mexico, Russia, Ukraine, and Cuba co-sponsored by the Mexican, Canadian, U.S., Cuban, and former Eastern European Soviet governments. German-born photographer Thomas Heinser creates advertising and editorial images for an international clientele. He has received numerous awards for his work and his photographs have been included in several books and displayed in galleries.
Though he first came to the United States on a premium car shoot, Heinser quickly became known for his ability to set up and capture authentic moments with people and situations. "For me, photography is about the human experience and the interaction with the person, environment or object I am taking a picture of. It is important that there is room to explore within the situation,” says Heinser, who established his first studio in San Francisco in 1985. He also built a day-light studio in a reconstructed barn just north of the city.
With over twenty-five years as a commercial and editorial photographer, Heinser has the comfort and skill to encourage the unexpected and create photographs that are authentic. He enjoys a widely versatile career, working with ad agencies and media worldwide, shooting everything from cars to kids, livestock to landscapes, acrobats to airplanes. In fact, he is the primary photographer for NetJets Europe for the third year in a row, shooting still and video for print and web. For more info: http://www.thomasheinser.com/
For me, photography is about relationship and the exploration of the humanity between the person whose photo I am taking and myself. Shooting with film invites the richness of that connection by encouraging me to rely on my intuition and experience, instead of continually checking the camera screen or even stepping away to look at the monitor. I want to push myself a little further to explore, not knowing exactly what I have gotten on film, all the while deepening the relationship and increasing the odds of capturing something organic and unique about the person and or situation. I want to stay present with the other person and not be pulled away by the offerings of digital technology and lure of perfection. Authenticity is rarely perfect but almost always inviting. Given the choice, especially on my own projects, I will continue on film.
