The e-mail mentoring program is now up and running.
The accomplished photographers listed below have graciously
agreed to answer questions regarding techniques, problems, and the
business of photography. We are very proud and grateful that they’ve
taken the time from their very busy schedules to aid and assist
the membership of this chapter.

Joel Avila - http://www.hawkeyeaerial.com/index.html
I've been in the aerial business for awhile
and have several people on the payroll including a helicopter /
fixed-wing pilot and digital / graphics person. We're using medium-format film
with an Imacon - Epson 2200/9600 combo using ultra chrome inks
(for the 9600) for large print requests, and for smaller stuff
we're shooting digital. All output is processed digitally
directly in the studio. Contact me if you needs a safe
pilot and are not familiar with flying in the Bay Area including
airspace restrictions and etiquette (when making requests from
the controllers).
Fred Wood - Celebrity and Aerospace/Military
photography. I
have photographed the Cannes Film Festival for 28 years, and the
Paris Air Show for 40 years. During this time, I not only
was a professional photographer, but a weapons inspector for Livermore
Lab in Livermore, and have close knowledge of military equipment,
WMD, and Aerospace technology mostly foreign.
Gerald Bybee - http://bybee.com/
Advertising/design specializing in digitally manipulated images
and portraits. His work has been featured in Communication Arts
Magazine, Graphis, Electronic Imaging, Imaging News and Online
Design. He has won multiple gold and "Best of Show" awards
in the Art Directors and Ad Club-sponsored San Francisco Shows.
Linked to his San Francisco studios, Bybee works from a state-of-the-art
digital studio at his West Sonoma County vineyard/ ranch. Gerald
works as a consultant, beta tester and early adopter of imaging
software and digital capture, cameras and output technologies.
His fine art work is represented by Fahey/Klein Galleries in
Los Angeles.
Stacy H. Geiken - http://artistnet.com/sgeiken/
Portraits, product, & location photography - Co-Director - The Palo Alto
Photographic Workshops, Palo Alto, CA, 1989-present. Teacher of Photography
- UC Extension, UC Santa Cruz, San Jose City College, West Valley College,
Brooks Institute
Niobe Burden - http://niobeburden.com/
Fine art, wedding photography, commercial - Niobe's fine art photography
is her best seller, but she has been involved in the commercial
realm of photography for years. She has not only sold her fine
art images in conceptual advertising but has also been involved
with the production of photography shoots for everything from
architecture and jewelry to executives and paper mills for annual
reports. Niobe believes that it's important to know the
value of your photography. Negotiation with clients is
essential. It's important to educate your clients as to
why they should want to pay more for your photographs.
Please keep in mind that these mentors have agreed
to do this gratis. Therefore, please keep it respectful and understanding
if it takes a while to get a response.
We’re excited about the start of this program
but we’re not stopping here. We’re looking into training
programs and would like to reach out more to schools, getting students
involved. This is just the beginning of what we hope will be a successful
program that meets the needs of our membership. If you have any
other ideas for mentoring programs, please send me an email at info@tobystjohnphoto.com.
